White tie is a dress code, the most formal dress code for evening occasions. It is also called full dress. To simplify a bit, for men it consists of a black tailcoat and matching pants; a low-cut marcella vest, studded shirt and bow tie that are all white; and black patent leather shoes. White leather gloves and top hat are optional. By tailcoat here I mean hammer-claw style, aka dress coat – double-breasted and non-closing, with the front cutting off at the waist – as opposed to its daytime counterpart, the morning coat, which is single-breasted and tapers into tails from the closure point.
